Counts that update as you type

Paste or write directly in the box and every number updates live: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading and speaking time. The “most used” row below the editor surfaces your six most repeated substantive words — a quick way to catch a crutch word before your readers do.

If you're writing against a platform character limit rather than a word target, the character counter shows live progress bars for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, SMS, and Google snippet limits.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses 220 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading of general text. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace — useful for speeches, videos, and podcast scripts.
What counts as a word?
Any run of letters or digits, including hyphenated and apostrophe words: 'state-of-the-art' counts as one word, as does "don't". Standalone punctuation and symbols don't count. The rules are Unicode-aware, so accented and non-Latin words count correctly.
How long should my text be?
Common targets: tweets up to 280 characters, LinkedIn posts up to 3,000 characters (about 450 words), meta descriptions around 155 characters, blog posts that target search usually 1,000–2,000 words, college essays commonly 250–650 words per prompt.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Counting runs in your browser as you type; the text never leaves your device. Refresh the page and it's gone.
